Why deck resurfacing matters in Ontario's climate

We've resurfaced decks across London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton, Brantford, and the surrounding region since 2014. Every resurfacing project starts with an honest framing assessment. If we find joists or posts that need attention, we'll document it and give you options before a single board is pulled. No surprises on invoicing day — just a written estimate you can count on.

Our Resurfacing Process: What Happens on Job Day

Resurfacing begins with a careful board-by-board removal, keeping the frame undisturbed. We inspect every joist, beam, and post with a probe for rot and a level for any sag or shift. Any compromised framing is flagged and quoted separately before we proceed. Once the structure gets our sign-off, we snap chalk lines, plan the reveal, and begin laying new decking with concealed or face fasteners depending on your material choice.

Railings go on last. Post bases are checked for solid backing into the rim joist or beam; new posts are through-bolted, not just toe-nailed. Balusters are spaced to Ontario Building Code's 4-inch sphere rule throughout. We haul away all removed material, sweep the site, and walk you through the finished deck before leaving. Most resurfacing projects wrap in one to two days, depending on deck size.

Decking Materials: Pressure-Treated, Cedar, Composite, and PVC

We work with four main decking materials. Pressure-treated lumber is the budget-smart choice — treated to above-ground retention levels, dimensionally stable, and paint- or stain-ready. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant, lighter, and gives a premium look that stains beautifully. Composite decking (Trex, Fiberon, TimberTech) is the low-maintenance pick — no annual staining, no splintering, and manufacturer warranties typically run 25–30 years. Cellular PVC goes a step further: fully waterproof, ideal for dockside or shaded decks prone to moisture.

Railing systems are matched to your new surface. We install pressure-treated, cedar, aluminum, cable, and glass-panel railings. Glass infill panels are popular on waterfront or view lots across the Hamilton Escarpment region. We'll walk you through realistic cost-versus-lifespan comparisons and never upsell a material that doesn't suit your climate conditions or maintenance comfort level.

Building Code, Permits & Long-Term Durability

Resurfacing itself rarely triggers a permit in Ontario, but if we're replacing posts or changing railing height, we'll flag the permit question up front and can handle the application for you. All railing heights, baluster spacing, and stair details are built to Ontario Building Code — the 36-inch guard height for decks under 600 mm, 42 inches above that, and 4-inch max baluster spacing are non-negotiable on every job. We can provide the documentation your municipality needs if a building inspection is required.

Durability starts at the fastener level. We use hot-dip galvanized or stainless hardware throughout — deck screws that won't rust-streak your new boards after two winters. Joist hangers and post-base hardware are rated for the load. We're fully WSIB-covered and carry liability insurance, so homeowners aren't exposed in the event of a job-site incident. Our workmanship guarantee covers installation defects for the life of the project.

Common Questions

Deck Resurfacing FAQs

How do I know if my frame is good enough to resurface?

We probe every joist and post for rot and check for any sag before committing to a resurface. If we find structural issues, we'll quote repairs separately so you can make an informed decision. Resurfacing on a compromised frame is never something we recommend.

Do I need a permit to resurface my deck in Ontario?

A like-for-like surface replacement typically doesn't require a permit. However, if railing height, post locations, or deck footprint changes are involved, a permit may be needed. We flag the question at estimate time and can handle the application on your behalf.

How long does a resurfaced composite deck last?

Quality composite decking carries manufacturer warranties of 25–30 years against fading, staining, and structural failure. With proper installation — adequate drainage gaps, correct fastener schedule — composite decks routinely outlast the frame below them.

Can you match the style of my existing railing?

In most cases, yes. We stock or can source pressure-treated, cedar, aluminum, cable, and glass-panel railing systems. If you have a specific look you want to replicate or a neighbouring section to match, bring photos to the estimate and we'll find the closest option.
