Pergola Staining
A stained and sealed pergola stays beautiful and structurally sound through Ontario's harshest seasons — Master Decker handles the prep, the product, and the result.
Pergola Staining in London & Southwestern Ontario
A pergola is one of the most exposed wood structures on your property. Horizontal beams and open-lattice roofs catch direct UV from above, collect standing water after every rain, and sit in the full force of whatever Ontario throws at them — blizzards, freezing rain, ice load, and months of blazing summer sun. Without proper staining and sealing, even a quality cedar pergola begins to gray, check, and crack within two or three seasons. At Master Decker, we treat pergolas, arbors, and trellises as the complex three-dimensional wood structures they are — not flat surfaces you can roll and call done.
- Full pressure washing of all pergola surfaces including beams, posts, and lattice
- Wood brightener application and pH neutralization before stain
- Brush-applied penetrating stain on all faces including top surfaces, end grain, and joints
- Structural inspection with written notes on any soft wood or significant checking
- Colour consultation with on-site samples before application
- Written workmanship guarantee and re-coat interval recommendation
All-Surface Coverage
We brush-apply stain to every face of every member — tops, bottoms, ends, and joints — so no unprotected wood is left to absorb moisture and check open.
Freeze-Thaw Rated
Penetrating oil-based stains flex with the wood through Ontario's seasonal cycling rather than forming a brittle surface film that cracks and traps water underneath.
3–5 Year Finish Life
Properly prepped and stained pergolas hold their colour and protection for three to five years — far longer than brush-on sealers from a home centre applied over dirty wood.

Why pergola staining matters in Ontario's climate
Our pergola staining process starts with a thorough clean and inspection, followed by prep work that reaches every face of every member: top surfaces, bottom surfaces, side faces, and the cut ends where moisture enters fastest. We use penetrating oil-based stains that flex with the wood through freeze-thaw cycling rather than sitting on top as a brittle film. The result is a pergola that holds its colour for three to five years, sheds water properly, and doesn't develop the checking and cupping that comes from unprotected wood going through repeated wet-dry cycles in our Southwestern Ontario climate.
Why Pergolas Fail Faster Than Decks Without Proper Staining
Deck boards shed water downward by gravity. Pergola members are different — horizontal beams trap water on their top faces, open joints collect debris that stays wet, and vertical posts wick moisture from the ground up through end grain. The geometry of a pergola means virtually every member is oriented in a way that maximizes moisture contact, and that moisture stress is compounded in Ontario by the freeze-thaw cycling that happens dozens of times each winter. Water that soaks into unprotected wood expands when it freezes, opening checks and cracks that collect more water the next time it rains.
A quality penetrating stain applied to clean, dry wood seals the cell structure against moisture intrusion without creating a brittle film that cracks and traps water underneath. Penetrating products breathe with the wood, which matters enormously on the large-dimension lumber typical of pergola construction — 4x4 posts, 2x6 and 2x8 beams — where the core of the wood continues to move seasonally long after the surface appears dry. We apply stain by brush on all pergola work, working it into joints, end grain, and any checks that have already formed to maximize penetration and coverage.
Cleaning and Prep: The Step That Makes the Stain Last
A pergola that hasn't been stained in a few years — or has never been stained at all — carries a surface layer of oxidized gray wood, algae, mildew, and often spider webs, bird droppings, and organic debris lodged in the joinery. New stain applied over this contamination layer bonds poorly and fades unevenly, leaving a pergola that looks worse than before. Our prep process for pergola work includes pressure washing all accessible surfaces, applying wood brightener to restore natural tone and neutralize pH, and allowing full drying time before any product is applied.
We pay particular attention to horizontal beam tops, which collect the heaviest biological growth and UV oxidation, and to post bases, which are typically the first area to show moisture damage. If we find soft wood, significant checking, or joints that have opened and are holding debris, we note these in our walk-through and discuss the options with you before quoting the staining work. Most pergolas in the 10–15 year range need a modest amount of structural attention alongside the staining, and it's always cheaper to address it while we're already on-site than to call us back later.
Colour Options and Long-Term Maintenance for Pergolas
Pergolas are often the visual centrepiece of an outdoor living space, so colour selection matters. We help homeowners across London, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, and the GTA choose between transparent finishes that let the full grain of the cedar read through, semi-transparent tones that add warmth while showing the wood's character, and semi-solid options that provide maximum UV protection with just a hint of grain showing. For pergolas adjacent to a stained deck, we can match or complement the deck tone — most of the premium oil-based stains we use are available in consistent colour families across product lines.
Once stained, a pergola in Southwestern Ontario typically needs re-staining every three to five years depending on sun exposure and site conditions. South-facing structures in open yards need attention sooner than shaded arbors in sheltered gardens. We recommend an annual visual check for checking, soft spots at post bases, and any areas where water is pooling rather than shedding. Catching these issues early — spot-sealing a check, clearing debris from a joint — adds years to the life of the finish and the structure. We're happy to discuss ongoing maintenance with any customer after the initial job.

Common Questions
Pergola Staining FAQs
Can you stain a pergola that has never been stained before?
Absolutely — new or never-treated cedar and pressure-treated pergolas are some of the best candidates for staining because we're starting with a clean substrate. We still clean and brighten the wood to remove any mill glaze or surface oxidation, then apply two coats of penetrating stain for maximum depth and longevity.
How long does pergola staining take?
Most residential pergolas can be cleaned and stained in one to two days. We typically schedule the pressure wash and brightener on day one, allow 48 hours of drying time, then return for the stain application. Weather and the size of the structure affect the exact timeline.
My pergola has some cracked or checked beams. Should those be repaired before staining?
Surface checks — the hairline cracks that run along the grain — are normal in large-dimension lumber and don't affect structural integrity. We work penetrating stain into these checks during application to seal them against water. Deeper splits or soft spots should be addressed first, and we'll flag these during our pre-job inspection.
Do you stain arbors and garden trellises as well as pergolas?
Yes. We treat any outdoor wood structure — arbors, trellises, privacy screens, decorative gates. The cleaning, prep, and staining process is the same regardless of structure type. If it's wood and it's outside in Ontario, it benefits from a proper penetrating stain and sealer.
