Vinyl & Composite Fencing in London & Southwestern Ontario

Wood fences in Ontario age fast. Freeze-thaw cycles work moisture into every grain, posts heave and lean, and within eight to ten years most wood privacy fences need significant repair or full replacement. Vinyl and composite fencing solves that problem at the source. Master Decker has been installing maintenance-free fence systems across London, Woodstock, Brantford, Strathroy, and into Hamilton since 2014 — and we've watched vinyl fences we installed a decade ago still standing plumb while neighbouring wood fences sag. The material is only part of the equation; installation technique, post depth, and concrete mix make the difference between a fence that holds its line and one that doesn't.

  • Full-privacy tongue-and-groove vinyl panel installation
  • Shadowbox, picket, and horizontal composite style options
  • Posts set below Ontario frost depth in sized concrete footings
  • Aluminium-reinforced gate posts with stainless-steel hardware
  • ON1CALL utility locate before any excavation
  • Written workmanship guarantee on all installations

Why vinyl & composite fencing matters in Ontario's climate

Our vinyl and composite product line covers the full range of residential and light-commercial applications: full-privacy tongue-and-groove panels, semi-private shadowbox panels that allow air flow while blocking sightlines, classic picket in three-rail and two-rail configurations, and modern horizontal composite styles that have become increasingly popular on newer properties in the Kitchener, Hamilton, and GTA markets. Every post is set below Ontario's frost depth in concrete sized to the panel height and local soil conditions. We carry WSIB coverage and full liability insurance, and every installation comes with a written workmanship guarantee.

Why Vinyl Outlasts Wood in Ontario's Climate

Ontario's seasonal swing from −20°C winters to +35°C summers stresses fence materials harder than most of North America. Wood absorbs moisture in spring, expands in heat, and contracts in the deep cold — each cycle widening the checks and cracks that eventually become rot channels. Vinyl doesn't absorb water. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is managed by the internal aluminium reinforcing we install in all gate posts and corner posts, which prevents the warping that cheap vinyl installations develop when the August sun hits dark-coloured panels.

Composite fencing adds a wood-fibre core to a PVC shell, delivering a warmer, more textured appearance without the maintenance liability of natural wood. The fibre core is fully encapsulated, so moisture can't reach it, and the surface accepts cleaning with a garden hose rather than a pressure washer and stain application every two years. For properties in London's Old South neighbourhood or heritage lots in St. Thomas where a natural-looking fence complements the architecture, composite profile styles offer the aesthetic without the upkeep.

Post Setting & Foundation — Where Fences Fail

The most common reason a vinyl fence fails — leaning, racking, or pulling apart at the panel joints — is an under-engineered post foundation. Ontario's frost depth ranges from 1.2 to 1.5 metres depending on region and soil drainage. Every Master Decker post is set at or below that depth in a concrete footing with a diameter sized to the panel height: a 6-foot privacy panel gets a larger footing than a 3-foot picket. We use fast-setting concrete mixed to the right water ratio — not straight from the bag with a splash of water, which produces weak, honeycombed footings that crack by year three.

Gate posts receive aluminium channel reinforcing inside the vinyl sleeve and heavier footings than line posts to manage the dynamic load of repeated swinging. We install stainless-steel hardware on all gate hinges and latches — standard hardware corrodes within a few Ontario winters and leads to sagging gates. Before the first post hole is dug, we call Ontario One Call (ON1CALL) to locate buried utilities. This isn't optional; it's the law, and skipping it is how contractors hit gas lines.

Modern Styles for Contemporary Ontario Properties

The horizontal composite fence has become the signature look on new construction in Hamilton, Oakville, and London's north-end developments. Boards run lengthwise between steel or aluminium posts, creating clean lines that pair well with board-and-batten exteriors and minimalist landscaping. Master Decker fabricates these installations on site, custom-cutting each board to the run length rather than relying on fixed panel modules — the result is a seamless, bespoke appearance rather than the modular look of a panel system.

For clients who want a traditional appearance, our PVC picket and three-rail profiles match the dimensional look of painted wood without the scraping and painting cycle. White and tan are the most popular colours across our service area, but manufacturers now offer a full range of greys, clay, and even woodgrain-embossed finishes that read as natural wood from the street. We bring physical samples to every estimate appointment so you can evaluate colour and profile scale against your home's exterior before we order a single post.

Common Questions

Vinyl & Composite Fencing FAQs

How deep do you set fence posts in Ontario?

We set all posts at or below Ontario's frost depth — typically 1.2 to 1.5 metres depending on your region and soil drainage. Shallower posts heave over winter and are the primary cause of fence failure. Every footing is poured in concrete sized to the panel height.

Does vinyl fencing hold up in extreme cold?

Quality vinyl rated for northern climates remains flexible rather than brittle down to around −40°C. We only install product certified for Canadian climates. Impact from a snow plow or heavy branch is a bigger risk than cold temperature, and most vinyl fence manufacturers include impact warranties.

Can you match the fence line on a sloped lot?

Yes. We use either a racked (stepped) or a sloped-rail approach depending on the panel style and the degree of grade change. We assess your lot during the estimate and recommend the method that keeps the visual line cleanest. Sharply sloped lots in Hamilton and St. Thomas are routine for our crews.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Ontario?

Most municipalities in Ontario require a permit for fences over a certain height — typically anything over 1.8 metres (6 feet) and sometimes lower in front yards. Rules vary by municipality. We advise you on likely requirements during the estimate; pulling the permit is the homeowner's responsibility but we can guide the process.
