Fence Painting
A freshly painted fence does more than look sharp — it adds years of life to the wood and boosts your property's curb appeal overnight.
Fence Painting in London & Southwestern Ontario
Ontario's climate is brutal on fences. Hard freezes crack bare wood, spring moisture breeds mildew, and summer UV bleaches even the best paint job inside of a few years if the prep work is cut short. At Master Decker, fence painting starts with a thorough assessment of the substrate — whether that's cedar, pressure-treated pine, wrought iron, aluminum, or vinyl — because each material demands a different prep protocol and coating system. We've been working on Southwestern Ontario properties since 2014, and we've learned that the single biggest reason fence paint fails prematurely is inadequate surface preparation, not inferior paint.
- Full fence pressure wash and surface dry-out inspection
- Hand-sanding and spot priming of bare, cracked, or rusted sections
- Two-coat solid-colour finish (latex stain or DTM enamel as appropriate)
- Colour consultation with physical sample chips on-site
- Protection of adjacent plants, paving, and structures from overspray
- Post-job walk-around and written workmanship guarantee
Extended Fence Lifespan
A properly sealed coat locks out moisture that causes wood rot and metal corrosion, adding years of structural life to your fence.
Instant Curb Appeal
A fresh, uniform colour transforms an eyesore fence into a clean boundary that makes the whole property look cared-for and well-maintained.
Cost-Effective Maintenance
Repainting on a regular cycle costs far less than replacing rotted boards or full fence sections — protecting your investment over the long term.

Why fence painting matters in Ontario's climate
Our team handles everything: pressure washing, hand-sanding rough grain, spot-treating rust on metal pickets, priming bare or repaired sections, and applying two finish coats of a premium solid-colour exterior coating. We stock a wide range of tints so you can match existing trim, siding, or a brand-new colour direction entirely. Every job ends with a detailed walk-around so you can confirm the coverage before we pack up. If you're in London, Woodstock, St. Thomas, or anywhere in between, call us for a free written estimate and we'll tell you exactly what your fence needs.
Wood Fence Painting: Prep Is Everything
Cedar and pressure-treated fences that haven't been maintained in three or more years almost always show grey surface oxidation, raised grain, and at least a few cracked boards. Before a drop of paint goes on, we power-wash at a controlled pressure to remove dirt, algae, and failing old coatings without blowing fibres out of soft cedar. Once dry — and we mean genuinely dry, typically 48 hours minimum in Ontario's variable spring weather — we sand any raised grain, knock down splinters, and spot-prime knots and end grain with an oil-based primer to prevent tannin bleed-through.
Solid-colour latex stains and full exterior paints are both on the table depending on how much wood texture you want to retain and how long you want to go between recoats. Solid stains penetrate slightly and flex with the wood's seasonal movement; paints build a harder film that hides more imperfections but can peel if moisture gets underneath. We'll walk you through the trade-offs honestly — no upselling a more expensive product when the simpler option genuinely performs better for your situation.
Metal & Vinyl Fence Finishing Without the Drips
Wrought-iron and aluminum fencing require rust-inhibiting primer before any topcoat — skip that step and you'll be peeling paint off pitted metal inside two seasons. We wire-brush or grind active rust spots back to bare metal, apply a zinc-rich or rust-converter primer, and then finish with a direct-to-metal (DTM) enamel that holds up to road splash, fertilizer overspray, and the constant expansion-contraction cycle that Ontario temperature swings demand. Spray application gives ornamental fencing the cleanest look; brush and roller are used for flat-rail sections where overspray onto gardens is a concern.
Vinyl fencing is a different puzzle: standard paints bond poorly to slick PVC and can trap moisture behind the film. We use a flexible bonding primer specifically formulated for vinyl substrates, followed by a 100% acrylic topcoat with UV inhibitors. Colour choice matters on vinyl — very dark colours absorb heat and can cause thermal warping on cheaper fence sections, so we always advise clients in the London area on safe colour ranges before committing.
How Often Should You Repaint a Fence in Ontario?
Solid-colour painted wood fences in Southwestern Ontario typically need a fresh topcoat every 5 to 8 years if the original application was properly prepped and primed. The giveaway signs that it's time: paint is chalking (rubs off white on your hand), edges and end grain are cracking, or you can see bare wood at board joints. Catching it at the chalking stage means light prep and one coat; waiting until the wood greys out and checks means a full strip-and-prime job that costs considerably more.
An annual five-minute inspection goes a long way — walk the fence line after the first hard frost and look for popped nails, cracked boards, and any section where caulk has pulled away from posts. Addressing those small repairs before repainting prevents moisture infiltration that causes paint to bubble. Master Decker offers touch-up and maintenance packages for clients in London and the surrounding region so you can stay ahead of weather damage rather than scrambling for a full repaint every few years.

Common Questions
Fence Painting FAQs
Do I need to replace damaged boards before you paint?
We assess every board during the prep stage and flag anything structurally compromised. Minor cracks and surface checks can be filled; severely rotted boards should be replaced before painting, otherwise the new paint just conceals a problem that will worsen. We can handle small carpentry repairs as part of the job.
Can you match my fence colour to my house trim?
Yes. Bring us a chip of your trim colour or share a paint code and we'll mix a custom tint. We can also colour-match to a photo in most cases. We carry Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams tintable bases on the truck.
How long does a fence painting job take?
A standard residential fence — say, 120 linear feet of 6-foot privacy fence — typically takes one full day for prep and wash, then a second day for priming and two finish coats once the surface is confirmed dry. Weather is always a factor with Ontario springs.
Is there a best time of year to paint a fence in Ontario?
Late spring through early fall is ideal — surface temperatures above 10°C and low humidity help paint cure properly. We avoid painting in direct midday sun or when rain is forecast within 24 hours of application. We book fence work from May through October.
